SUPER SATURDAY FOR CHALK ART FESTIVAL
Miguel Cuevas Wins People’s Choice and Judges 1st Place
Yakima, WA – Between 800 and 1,000 people attended Downtown Yakima’s Chalk Art Festival 2018 this past Saturday on North 3rd Street. The folks who turned out took in some fabulous art work by the chalk artists as well as enjoyed their own doodling while listening to live music.
“We saw a significant increase in attendance this year, “said Downtown Association of Yakima Executive Director, Andrew Holt. “We really appreciate the support of the community and the artists, as well. To see all these families out here, and the kids having such a blast, it is truly a happy day.”
Skilled artists worked on their elaborate drawings throughout the day, using pastel sticks to create their images. Attendees voted on their favorite for the People’s Choice Award while 3 judges selected 1st through 3rd place, judging on a set criterion. Toppenish artist Miguel Cuevas swept the voting, winning both the People’s Choice and the judge’s votes, with his rendition of Spider Man (image attached). Cuevas received a 1st Place Ribbon and a $50 gift certificate from the Bindery for both of his winnings. Second place went to Rosie Saldana and Maria Rueda (2nd Place Ribbon and $25 gift certificate); Third Place was awarded to Luis Ramirez Corona (3rd Place Ribbon and $15 gift certificate).
There were 27 entries in the artist category. Each artist was given 2 sets of pastels and created an image in the spirit of this year’s theme: Superheroes. Chalk Art Festival is put on by the Downtown Association of Yakima. This year’s event was made possible by presenting sponsor Ron’s Coins & Collectibles and a grant from Fresh Hop Ale Festival.
The live music was arranged by Omar Gambito and featured performances by Arissa Connel,
Abby Brown, Jadyn George, Jayleigh Ann & The Lost Boys, and Sophie Boss. The Yakima Symphony Orchestra also provided piano music.
