Featured Business -- SEWN
SEWN will open at 25 N. Front Street # 2 on May 15. The one time taproom is now a beautiful boutique fabric store focused on garment making, owned and operated by Yakima local Sierra Hutton.
“I’ve been sewing for over 20 years,” says Hutton. “As a sewist, I’ve always valued a local fabric store for the quality of items, but also the knowledge and passion of the people who work there and the community of people who shop there! I wanted to make that here in Yakima.” (A sewist is the combination of the words “sew” and “artist” to describe someone who creates sewn works of art.)
So why the downtown location? “I love downtown! When I thought about where I wanted to open my business, I wanted a place that felt vibrant and connected - downtown feels like that! I wanted people to stop by after lunch or getting a coffee or a glass of wine with friends. And I love all the events that go on downtown - it just feels like the right place to open a business.”
“Textiles can be quite wasteful,” continues Hutton. “SEWN is committed to being a positive impact… our focus is on more sustainable options and avoiding new fabrics that contain plastic. We're also bringing that to our impact in Yakima - a portion of all sales will be donated to a different local organization each month.”
If you know how to sew or are just getting started, SEWN will have what you need to make (or repair) beautiful clothes. Fabric is so versatile; take a chance. “I have seen some amazing things done by people who would say they don't know how to sew!” says Hutton. Getting to know Sierra:
School: Graduated from Eisenhower High School in 2011 and UW in 2014, where she majored in Political Science with a focus on Political Economics.
Hobbies: Sewing is my main passion, but it is the business. I also enjoy rock climbing and have recently been getting really into reading again - thanks pandemic!
Favorite Movie: I never have a good answer for this. I do love pretty much any movie musical, “Singing in the Rain” is probably my favorite.
Favorite TV Show: Currently, “The Office.” I'm so sad it's not on Netflix anymore!
Favorite food: I love tacos - and I happen to be right next to Erik the Mercedes Kid. I won't say that was intentional, but I won't say it wasn't either!
