Farmers’ Market to Open Mother’s Day

Farmers’ Market to Open Mother’s Day

The opening day for the new Downtown Yakima Farmers’ Market will be on May 13th, Mother’s Day Weekend, the traditional opening for the farmers’ market.  “We are ecstatic that even with the time crunch, we will be able to keep Mother’s Day Weekend as our opening, “Says Downtown Association of Yakima Executive Director, Andrew Holt. “Our new Market Manager, Yvette Lippert, is supplying the maximum effort to guarantee that we hit that date. She feels it is very important to the vendors and the community to have the market’s opening day on that weekend. We also know that asparagus has such a brief season and Yvette does not want to short anyone’s opportunity to sell or buy asparagus.”

The initial schedule calls for the market to run from May 13th to October 28th. There are preliminary plans to have special, themed days such as “Kids Day”. Announcements on schedule specifics will be forthcoming.

All vendor questions and applications can be directed to the Farmers’ Market email: farmersmarket@downtownyakima.com. A website is in the process of being developed and will be online in the near future. When it is up, the url will be www.downtownyakimafarmersmarket.com. In addition to having the full array of market information, the website will also contain an online form for vendor registration. A Facebook page is also in the works.

Businesses and organizations interested in becoming sponsors for the market can contact Yvette Lippert about sponsorship packages at farmersmarket@downtownyakima.com.

“Things are moving very quickly, “says Holt”, but we are buoyed by the support we have received from the vendors and the community. Yvette is working very hard and plans to make this a top notch market. Her background and expertise is already paying off.”

Holt adds, “As I have stated before, a vibrant, dynamic, community supported farmers’ market in the downtown is a critical element to the revitalization of a downtown. We feel this is an important step in our mission to create a thriving downtown.”
