Think & Drink: One Click Away @ Gilbert Cellars

October 16, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

This event is free and open to the public – registration is required. Please register via the ticket link above. Event is open to all ages.

Presented by nonprofit Humanities Washington, Think & Drink events are hosted conversations at pubs and tasting rooms on provocative topics and new ideas.

Has the internet made hate more infectious? Personalized feeds and sophisticated algorithms can direct us to content and communities that reinforce our most radical ideas and worst impulses — and dare us to act on them.

A rise in hate groups, coupled with multiple mass shootings that incubated in dark online corners, has raised urgent questions: How has the web affected how we treat one another? Despite the benefits of a connected world, is the internet built for hate?

From trolling to White Nationalism, join us to explore the mechanics of online hate, the responsibilities of tech companies and governments, and what we should — and shouldn’t do — to try to stem the tide.

Featuring Gonzaga University professors, Jim Mohr, Vik Gumbhir, and Melissa A. Click. In partnership with the Gonzaga Institute for Hate Studies.

Founded in 1973, Humanities Washington is the state’s flagship non-profit for public humanities programming and an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Learn more at humanities.org.
