Yakima, WA- The 14th Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival has been announced for Saturday & Sunday May 2nd & 3rd in Downtown Yakima. The biggest event in downtown Yakima highlight of the event is the crowing of the Ms. Cinco de Mayo who receives a $5,000 scholarship as the winner of the pageant.
The four finalists vying for the title of Ms Cinco de Mayo are: Dulce Maria Diaz-Martinez, Senior Davis High School, Venus Lomeli- Senior Davis HS, Yulissa Martinez- Junior Eisenhower HS, Elizabeth Valencia – Junior Davis HS.
Avina Gutierrez, Ms. Cinco de Mayo Volunteer Coordinator said, “All are very deserving and are taking the competition very seriously. What a great group of young ladies!” She also reported that for the past 6 weeks they have been attending seminars and participating in activities that help them develop leadership skills, self-confidence exercises and community awareness.
All are planning to continue their education after high school and know the high cost of higher education. The pageant provides the winning participants academic scholarships for post-secondary education to achieve their career goals.
The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Yakima County is sponsoring the event for the 14th consecutive year in downtown Yakima. The Cinco de Mayo Planning Committee meets every Monday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 22 S. 3rd Avenue and is open to the public. Volunteers are always welcome.
